The California Department of Corrections has enacted emergency regulations to ban all weightlifting programs and equipment. Public comment period on the new regulations ends 23 February 1998. A hearing will also be held on that date.The regulations are changed to read, "Inmate weight lifting programs and equipment shall not be permitted at departmental institutions/facilities. Exceptions shall be permitted as specifically authorized by the director in compliance with Penal Code section 5010." Cal. Code Regs., title 15, 3320(g).

On Feb. 13, 1998, we visited with the "Officer of the Day" at California DOC. He told us the weights were banned on Feb. 2nd and the ban was not in response to a specific incident.
